OK so we know what this article is going to be about. We’re going to talk about how we need to be prepared to give of ourselves, to put ourselves out there and in turn reap the benefits. Well, that kind of thing, and we’ll get there…. Please hang in there until the end.
It took me a while to let this realisation about giving sink in. Coming from a competitive corporate background where information is advantage and guarded accordingly, just freely giving away good stuff was frankly a little bizarre. So I’m to put stuff out there for someone to use and benefit from with no guarantee that they’ll come back to me, ever? Really? So how am I supposed to make any money…? And so it went on for a little while. I’m sure we’ve all pondered that once or twice. Or is it just me?
Anyway, suffice to say that I, like most of you, have been working at putting stuff out there that I hope people find useful. If you like me and what I’m about and want to know more, that really is a bonus.
So what else of this giving thing? Well, read on dear guest….
It’s all well and good pumping stuff out into the blogosphere and working the universe for all its hidden gems as we strive for personal development and betterment in pursuit of our goals. Not to say that isn’t a good thing! However, there are plenty of people out there who aren’t in a position to help themselves, just plain and simple. Sure, personal development may come in to play at some point in the future, if they are lucky, but right now they need a helping hand. From me and you.
So if you’re really genuine about giving, here’s an opportunity to do so.
Some of you may know I like to run. I’m not particularly good at it yet but I’m improving. Back in May I signed up to a few rather challenging events that looked like this;
June – 20K (approx 12.5 mile) Extreme Off-Road
August – 13.2 Mile Road Half Marathon
October – 26 Mile Multi-Terrain Challenge
December – 26.2 Mile Road Marathon
January – 45 Mile Off-Road Ultra Marathon
Now unfortunately in the build up to the first event I got injured. I ran it anyway and completed it. However, I then missed the second event on medical advice. And because I couldn’t walk properly. But I’m now back and building up the miles. I also need to add an event to make up for the one missed and I’m hoping for a place in the London Marathon in April. Either way, it’ll be 5 events, come what may. That’s what I committed to after all!
Now for the good bit. All this is in aid of 3 Charities.
Help for Heroes
The wars in Afganistan and Iraq have laid waste to the lives of thousands of servicemen and their families. Help the Heroes…..
Whether it’s my countryman or yours, we’re likely on the same side, if you can make any sense at all of this mess. I’m apolitical on this subject, just tired of seeing flag-draped boxes carried from planes at the airbases and young men and women’s lives ruined.
That’s my view and this is theirs;
Help for Heroes was founded by Bryn and Emma Parry in October 2007 out of a desire to help the wounded Servicemen and women returning from Afghanistan and Iraq. The message of the charity is simple: We are strictly non political and non critical; we simply want to help. We believe that anyone who volunteers to serve in time of war, knowing that they may risk all, is a hero. These are ordinary people doing extraordinary things and some of them are living with the consequences of their service for life. We may not be able to prevent our soldiers from being wounded, but together we can help them get better.
Mind
Our mission
Our vision is of a society that promotes and protects good mental health for all, and that treats people with experience of mental distress fairly, positively and with respect.
The needs and experiences of people with mental distress drive our work and we make sure their voice is heard by those who influence change.
Our independence gives us the freedom to stand up and speak out on the real issues that affect daily lives.
We provide information and support, campaign to improve policy and attitudes and, in partnership with independent local Mind associations, develop local services.
We do all this to make it possible for people who experience mental distress to live full lives, and play their full part in society.
Prostate Cancer
OK so men are idiots. We know this. We’re even fairly accepting of it most days. How can so many men die because they don’t have a simple examination? And how poor is it that health checks don’t include as standard a simple test for a protein that gives early warning to prostate cancer? And then what? Here’s a bit about the charity;
We campaign to improve prostate cancer health care services because we believe that people affected by prostate cancer should receive the highest standards of treatment and care wherever they live.
A diagnosis of prostate cancer and the side effects of treatment for the disease can have a huge impact on men and their families. Having access to support services designed to help men cope with these effects can make a real difference and ensure that men are able to lead as normal a life as possible.
So many of you may be thinking, that’s all well and good but what’s that got to do with me? These guys aren’t even in my town/state/country/continent…. And that may be very true. These charities touch people’s lives in a real and meaningful way, regardless of where we all sit on the globe Research and treatment breakthroughs in your country come to mine and vice versa. And remember, what goes around comes around.
Fittingly, we’re back where we started (that was actually quite smooth for me. High 5 to self!). By giving first, we can get so much more back in return. I thank you sincerely for reading this far and if you’d like to contribute, with fundraising or with encouragement, I will be extremely grateful. I also know that we get asked to contribute a lot and I shan’t be remotely offended if you can’t or don’t want to. So there’s your get-out clause. Walk away guilt free. It’s fine, really. As with all things, the choice is yours.
Please let me add, that none of this is wrapped up in a ‘holier than thou’ attitude. It’s just one of the ways I choose to give back to people that need stuff.
My sincere thanks again for not only stopping by, but for contributing so freely to my blog and networking experience.
Regards,
Andrew

Hi Andrew,
I see that you are a caring, giving person, and everybody will support that. And you seem to be running the miles for your charities! I am sure it is making a great difference to the benefactors!
Keep up the good work, my friend, and I am looking forward to networking with you.

Hi Linda,
Thanks for your kind words. My mind is stronger than my body if the truth be told but I’m getting there! We all have our ways of giving back and this is one of mine. A couple of years ago I took part in a white collar boxing tournament. Went well but I think running is easier
Thanks again for coming by Linda.

Andrew,
I agree that it is essential to give, and then to give some more. And it is also important to give when and where I feel called to give. Giving takes many forms and each of us has to decide which type of giving we can most afford at this point in time (giving of time, money, love, empathy, knowledge, skills). You have chosen to give with your body, running for these really good causes. I wish you great success.

Hi Erica,
Thanks for your kind wishes. There’s certainly a lot to be said for giving where we feel a calling or connection. As with so many things, giving aimlessly or to every cause will make for a very worn out soul. You have an amazing skills set from what I can see and I’m sure you touch peoples lives in a deep and meaningful way.
Thanks again.

Hey Andrew, Great Post about the value of giving. I believe that by providing value to others that you will eventually get something in return.
Good luck in running your Marathon in April. I have ran several marathons including Big Sur in California, which is the picture on my blog header. It is one of the must do marathons for anyone who runs marathons.

Hey Ted,
Thanks for taking the time to comment. I’m reasonably confident of getting a place in the London marathon. I have a 26 miler next month and another in December. The big one is a 45 mile ultra marathon in January, a distance that is way beyond me at the moment!
I was reading about Big Sur a little while ago in Runners World magazine. It was listed as one of the ‘must do’ marathons in the world. That’s one of my ambitions, to run the big marathons or events, which takes planning and financial freedom to achieve. My big goal is to do an iron man, before I’m 45. Just to prove to myself I can do it, and to raise some charity funds in the process. What other marathons have you done?

Hi Andrew,
I really enjoyed your post. Giving is so rewarding. I wish more people in the world would take hold of that concept. The more we can give of ourselves, the more blessings we will receive. I don’t just mean in the form of money…but just knowing that you have had some small part in making someone smile for that day is really a wonderful thing.
Wishing you the best!

You’re right that if more people got the concept, life would be a little kinder. However we can but do our bit. And like you, I don’t just mean in monetary terms. Time, expertise, PR… All adds up.

Hi Andrew. I got so much out of this post. Yes, you are what you give. Once of the things I took from a Tony Robbins event was: The secret of living is in the giving. It is very true in business life as well as our personal lives.
You have also reminded me of the many physical challenges I have taken on for charity. Marathon, 24 hour Squash Match…all sorts of silly stuff. But no matter what we do to raise money or how we contribute, contribute we must. Interestingly it is one of the central philosophies of the Rich Dad Course….10% for savings, 10% for investment, 10% for charity!
So congratulations on your great spirit and your charitable efforts. You WILL get the blessings for it!
Best wishes

Hi Peter,
Thank you so much. I’m really glad to have hit the spot! As I’ve said before, it took a while to sink through my thick skin, but no matter what form the giving takes, giving something of yourself is a must in my opinion. I think it makes me a better person. Not to judge what others do or do not do, it just works for me. And I’d be lying if I said I didn’t get a kick out of the physical stuff and a buzz from doing something worthwhile.
I’ve got Rich Dad here, next in the queue to be read and I’m looking forward to it.
Thanks again Peter and I wish you a blessed week.

Hi Andrew,
Love this post on giving, that is what it is all about really. I have for years worked with kids and my main objective has been to empower them.
Now I have moved some away from the kids(too old to keep up) and working to help older people, to empower them so they have a richer life.
This week, you, me and Maggie are all in same TSA group…YEAH…little do they know the power of SD.

It’s refreshing to see someone who puts so much effort into giving it away! I, too, come from a very corporate background, intellectual property, and keep your ideas under lock and key or others will find a way to either sabotage your efforts or steal them and take credit and your profit! It has taken me months to really understand this new marketing and mentality.

Thanks for coming by and also for your kind words. Yes, beating the coporate mentality takes a while doesn’t it?! Every day of every week is filled with ‘aha!’ moments whilst I’m on such a steep learning curve. In fact sometimes I think that transistioning from a corporate life is more difficult than someone just deciding to go from scratch where there’s still heaps to learn but less to ‘unlearn’. If that makes sense?
The best part of Tribes and TSA is getting to meet a lot of really great, giving and open people. So the honor is all mine.

Great post, I have always loved to give. I give a lot of my time for charities and benifits. I have seen some great results because I and others were willing to give.
If we are not open to give it closes a lot of doors to recieving. I have been blessed many times over.

Many thanks. When I’ve been reading your blog, whilst I don’t think you’d specifically mentioned it, I got the impression that you’d probably given away your talents for charitable causes. And what a talent to keep people entertained and laughing. I’m actually low on talent in the running department and high on stubbornness. It ain’t pretty, but I get there
I think you’re right in what you say about closing doors to receiving if we’re not open to give. The more we do it, the more obvious it becomes.

As I said in a response to Deborah, undoing the corporate mentality takes a while. It gets drilled in to you to the point where being completely open is counter-intuitive and really takes effort to go through the discomfort of change. It’s so worth it though!

I really liked this as all of us (me included) get caught up in our own ‘little’ world and forget there are other people out there who are having a tough go of it also. What if we all made an effort at helping other people first? What would happen. I recently saw a movie that really impacted me. Pay It Forward. Wow! If you have not seen it, go rent it asap. It will really open up your eyes to giving for the sake of giving.

Mike,
Thanks for coming back. Clearly a glutton for punishment
Yeah, you’re right about our own little worlds. I was lucky enough to be raised by my grandparents until I was almost 6 years old. They didn’t have much but they taught me a couple of early lessons. Manners cost nothing and it pays to be polite to everybody, no matter who you think they are. They also said that if you can help someone, you should you should (there’s a limit to this but believe it or not, that went without a refrigerator for a while as they gave theirs away to someone more needy…). It’s only recently that I realised that they were a walk the walk example of paying it forward. Very humbling now, and I can’t thank them for that lesson as they are long since passed.
I’ll keep my eye out for the movie, thanks for the tip!
Cheers for now.

I agree with Mike that we often think it’s all about us and forget that there are other people out there who are worse off and need our help in some way.
They may not even be worse off and just need a little help and support with something. Either way, you can’t help but feel good when you step forward to do your bit and so everyone benefits!

Hi Andrew
I understand how the giving away of free information was so foreign to a corporate person. I have been a teacher for the past 10 years and so of the mentality of sharing whatever I have to help students to learn. In some ways this is detrimental for a business mindset as I find it hard to charge for any of my services when warranted. Seems we would be a good fit and be able to come out some where in the middle. Admire the step further that you have taken in not only getting fit but having a great purpose for it. Hat off to you.

I can imagine that having been used to giving away your knowledge for free as part of your job role, to change to charging is a challenge. It’s funny isn’t it? I’m having to let go and you may need to hold back! In conversation with somebody yesterday they used the term ‘leap of faith’ and I think that’s what we do every day in this type of business. Maybe we could give each other some coaching to arrive at that meet in the middle point?!

What comes to mind for me Andrew is when I started with our company years ago and because of my past corporate life and beliefs I was trying to sell our opportunity with little success. I finally realized that our business was not right for everyone or it may not be the right time. My mission became to find the right people that were open and could benefit from our opportunity. In essence, to help people that wanted help. It all turned around after that. Being of service.
Thanks for this wonderful post. You inspired me to contribute.

Hi Andrew,
Oh, how I relate! Corporate world is not very giving! I especially found that in London working on IT projects. It was supposed to be about people, processes, systems but I believe that the people element was usually forgotten. As a project manager, I attempted to work the people back into the equation but oh, what a waste of time…
Now, I work with fellow people-focused entrepreneurs like yourself!
You are obviously very heart-led and I love that as you may have noticed by my writings and desire to assist people change their mind-set.
Giving is one of those concepts that takes a while and there are a lot, even successful entrepreneurs who don’t get it. I teach that the first 10% of your earnings needs to be given back and of course this relates to our time too. Congratulations on the decision to do that running for such worthy causes.
Thanks for being who you are – it is truly in giving that we receive. The TSA is the greatest example of this.

Hi Clare,
Funny that you worked in London. I’m from there originally and as I read your blog yesterday I stopped and went to your Clare’s Story page as I thought for a minute you were from the UK. Something about writing style maybe? I also started in the IT sector in project management before moving in to sales.
You’re so right in that despite lots of meaningful words, the actions that follow usually aren’t particularly caring of the people, or the ‘number 1 resource’ or ‘our greatest asset’ as the employees are often referred to. I’m happy to leave that mindset behind!
Thanks for you kind words Clare. It’s taken me a while to warm up to all this but I feel extremely good about it. I like your concept of 10%. I know a lot of people are struggling to pay the bills right now but it’s a really nice goal to aspire to. I’m know that the money I raise for charity is a drop in the ocean, but it all adds up and it also helps to raise awareness and also to get other people involved. Lots of win/win reasons to do it.
Thanks again Clare.

Hey Andrew,
What an amazing depiction of who you truly are.
No need to worry about others opinions of you when what you are doing you believe and know in your heart is the best thing to do. I learned a long time ago a couple of things about giving….
1. What you give away you always get to keep.
2. What you give away from your left hand lets what is in your right hand multiple.
Looking forward to hearing more about your running journey.
Make it a great day!
God Bless,
-ed

Hey Ed,
Thanks. And I’m really sorry to have taken so long to respond. Things have been crazy lately and I know that they have been for you as well.
It’s taken a me a while to get with the giving thing and whilst I don’t claim to have it completely cracked, I’m getting there. It’s a great thing and I’m enjoying life all the more for it.
Keep fighting the good fight Ed and thanks again.
Regards,
Andrew
